Nigeria is a nation trap in poverty, prone to human trafficking. United Nation estimates Nigeriacurrent population at 200,636,214 equivalent to 2.6% of the total world population. Unemployment remains high. According to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in the working-age group (15-64 years of age) unemployment has hit 23.1 per cent. This is a five per cent increase from 2017 when it was at 18.1 per cent. Low economic prosperity, corruption, conflicts, climate change /resulting migration and western consumerism at home fuel illegal migration and human trafficking. According to Emma Mbura (Kenya Senator), a cast in Maid in Hell said people travel to the Middle East, not as refugees but to earn a living and human traffickers target poor people.
Maid in Hell: a film by Why Slavery Foundation, tells the story of millions of migrant women working as modern-day slaves in the Middle East. The objective of the documentary is to promote the anti-slavery campaign. The kind of hell women migrant are facing and the strategy the human traffickers are using in trafficking people to the Middle East
Nigeria is a source, transit and destination country when it comes to human trafficking. Therefore, watching Maid in Hell will create the following;
- it will give young people the opportunity to expand and breadth of knowledge of human trafficking and illegal migration.
- it will make them start a conversation and share information about human trafficking and illegal migration. Therefore help them to make an informed decision on migration
- it will provide them greater perspective outside of their own experiences. Hence, gives them insight into different places like the Middle East and the rest of the world that they otherwise have very limited exposure to.
Lastly, the film will give them new information to absorb and learn about human trafficking and illegal migration. Also, it helps them pay more attention than seminar, lecture and reading.
In view of the above, Playsafe Life Care Foundation has put it upon herself to use the film to promote the anti-slavery campaign in Nigeria targeting young people while the organization will also use the film to advocate for better policy that will promote economic development for better livelihood.
