Why I want to be NAWOJ National Treasurer – Fatimah Rasheed

Fatimah Rasheed, Aspirant National Treasurer, NAWOJ

She is a great NAWOJIAN aspiring to take a national seat in a sensitive position. The NAWOJ, Kwara state aspirant has served in various capacities at the Chapel level, state level and a core staff at the Kwara state Television Authority, where she is a staff. She bore out her mind over her reasons for going into the contest to be a National Treasurer and gave a good account of herself as a worthy ambassador of the Association. Meet Hajia Fatima Rasheed, who spoke with our correspondent, Yusuf Bakare; excerpts:

Can we meet you?

My name is Fatima Rasheed.  A journalist by profession. I work with the Kwara State Televison Authority, KWTV.

How prepared are you for the upcoming triennial conference of NAWOJ?

Well, as candidate vying for the post of National Treasurer of the Association, we’re working round the clock to reach out to our sisters in all parts of the country to seek their support . So I can say we’re preparing very well for the event.

So you are vying to be National Treasurer?

Yes I am.

How do you intend to run the office and what does NAWOJ stand to gain if you are elected?

First of all, if I am elected as National Treasurer, I will be a new person up there but having served in several capacities at the state level, I will be bringing fresh ideas on board. Apart from the general financial oversight of the association’s fund, I will be looking at and suggesting ways to generate revenue for our association . We’re all aware our association thrive on dues alone presently . And so due to paucity of funds ,we go about soliciting for funds for every event . We will look at what the Association can also do to generate revenue for itself and for developmental trainings for members  if I’m elected national treasurer.  It shouldn’t just be about record keeping.

Why is NAWOJ separated from NUJ, any need for it?

NAWOJ is not separated from NUJ . The National Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ as the name implies is still an integral part of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ. The permission granted NAWOJ is just like how the Sport Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN is permitted to operate. U can’t separate one from another, we work in unison as one. There won’t be a NAWOJ or SWAN without the parent Union which is the NUJ. NAWOJ was established so that women journalist can explore their potentials; reach out to friends of journalist to achieve certain feat as women should, using power of women.

Since you joined NAWOJ would you say the association has achieved its goal?

NAWOJ is 31. I can’t say that the Association has achieved it’s set goals but I can assuredly tell you that NAWOJ has achieved tremendous feat and is definitely on the right path towards achieving greater and enviable height.

Are you being sponsored and what is the reason for sponsorship?

Definitely not! I am in the race to achieve my God given vision in leadership to serve an association that has brought me this far in practice of my chosen profession. No one is sponsoring me against any aspirant, I have the right to aspire to leadership of NAWOJ and even NUJ and that is exactly what I am exploring, trusting that God will make his wish come to pass through me to NAWOJ. I’m joining the race to offer my services and be a part of the running of our great Association. It is my wish to contribute my own quota to move the Association to greater and enviable heights. The founders of NAWOJ did their best, laid great examples and we are following, building upon the solid foundations that were built, in love and unity.

Have you developed a campaign slogan for your success in the election?

My slogan is “Bank on me….I will treasure your vote!”

How well are you carrying stake holders in Kwara NAWOJ in your mission to National assignment?

All stakeholders have rallied round me to ensure the success of this election.  Their support has been overwhelming and I can’t help but thank God and thank all stakeholders for making this a Kwara project. I really appreciate them all and I don’t take them for granted. Few days ago, I was presented to Mr Rafiu AJAKAYE, the Chief Press Secretary to  Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and he expressed gladness that Kwara has an aspirant in me. He also promised the support of the government but most importantly, I appreciate his prayers when he said that God will make it a brilliant success. All my colleagues, seniors and co workers have been rallying round me to make my dream their project. I am confident that with God on our side we shall succeed. Kwara has produced national officers in time past up to the Deputy National President. With that I have an assurance that stake holders in NAWOJ all over the federation will consider all the good works as well as past and present support that Kwara had put in to the association and pay us back with their reciprocal support. Kwara chapter of NAWAJO is in very good financial standing and good books at the national level. The dynamic leadership of Ms Bola Olupinla, whose visionary and innovative leadership has moved us further from where we were. I am sure you know that Hajia Binta Mora too did her lovely best as NAWOJ Chairman before handing over, after her tenure, to the present executives. We are one big family. Hajia Bilqees Modupe Oladimeji, the immediate past deputy national President during Mrs Omowole’s first term too has been of tremendous support in this mission.  NAWOJ Kwara has made good impact based on the foundation laid by our past leadership. The solid foundation paved was for someone like me coming out to contest. I must say this, I am not the best from Kwara, we have several equally wonderful and brilliant members who can stake their neck to this post but it has pleased God to make all others present me as their consensus candidate and this is what I am leaning on and will not disappoint their trust.  Kwara have never fallen back from making impacts at national assignments, we are at it again. We leave the rest to God and he shall, as usual surprise us with success.
