Universities in Nigeria A Waste Of Resources – Na’Allah, KWASU VC

The Vice-Chancellor of the Kwara State University, Malete, Kwara State, Professor Abdulrasheed Na’Allah has berated the lack of impact by Nigerian Universities on national development and the general administration of the country.

Na’Allah speaking with some Journalists in his office at the weekend said that the Universities in Nigeria has neglected their role in making an impact on the nation despite the resources invested on them yearly.

He said that Universities ought to chart a course for the nations technological development and solve some problems in and around Nigeria because of there us a direct relationship between the gown and the town.

On the democratization process, the Vice Chancellor said that elites and the University system is not proactive in creating a platform for politicians to work with. He said, “In times like this, we cannot afford to keep quiet; we should think for the government and teach them the way to go and support the vision of the political class.”

“No idea is been put forward by any University to the government, we seem shut out. Een here I am just trying to see what our dons can proffer as solutions to some national issues, even to get some dons to key into issues of the nation is a task. What then is the import of the University system?

“Universities should help to develop the economy of this nation. We should be thinking ahead of our government. Universities should create ideas and present to government.”

“Our academics should get close to politicians and give them ideas so that even when they are campaigning, they have a substance with which to talk and that gives them insight into solving some societal problems. Alienating ourselves from them will not take this nation anywhere.”

“As a people in the academic environment, we know the available resources in each state, we know what is needed to make these resources generate income for our state and our nation. For every step we take as a nation there is a long run effect of it on the nation, positively or negatively, the Universities should be able to pave the way.”

Na’Allah stressed that he is yet to see any company that is created because of a University in Nigeria. The system is not used to it, therefore, getting people to synergize with us to do this is a lot of struggle. The University system should create a platform by which some companies will exist only for the University because of its field of specialization and potentials for making inputs.

He called for the awakening of Nigerian Universities to their responsibilities towards national technological development as a way of augmenting national income and economic stability.

The Don explained that Kwara State University has operated since the past four years without subvention from the State Government adding that it had survived purely on internally generated revenue and some projects executed by the institution.
