SON Urges Firms, MDAs To Implement Quality, Environmental Management Systems

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has urged firms and agencies to implement Quality Management Systems, ISO 9001 and Environmental Management Systems, ISO 14000 to be competitive globally.

Mr Osita Aboloma, Director General of SON, represented by Mr David Obi, Regional Coordinator of SON in South East made the call in Awka on Thursday at a one day workshop to educate stakeholders on ISO 900 1 and ISO 14000 certification.

The workshop entitled, “Increased Awareness on Quality and Environmental Management Systems Standards,” was held in conjunction with Promex Multi-Service Nigeria for private firms, Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the South East.

Aboloma said firms and agencies must implement ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 certification and standards to meet international best practices.

He said there was need to save the environment in the course of production processes and service delivery.

“ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 certification, which represents Quality Management Systems and Environmental Management Systems respectively, are significant because they satisfy everybody including the producer, the purchaser and the environment which guarantees sustainability,”  he said.

Delivering the lecture, Mr Ololade Ayoola, Coordinator of SON in Delta State, said it was important for firms to conform to industrial standards by imbibing the principles of Quality Management Systems (QMS).

Ayoola described the environment as surroundings in which an organisation operated including air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna and humans.

He said the environment should be managed because of the consequences of production activities, which include public health issues, depletion if ozone layer, pollution and other harmful effects.

Speaking on the significance of the event, Mr Edmund Nkalu, Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Awka branch, said it was an awareness workshop that came with so much information for the stakeholders.

Nkalu said his association was worried about the future of the manufacturing sector in an environment where there were no standards and systems to guarantee quality and sustainability.

“The NSE is happy with what SON is doing here, quality and environment are very crucial for prosperity in the manufacturing sector and this ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 standards are timely.

“We wish there would be more of this type of awareness campaign in these areas so that those who should know will come to the full knowledge of their importance,” he said.

Another participant, Nnamdi Onusogu from Innoson Motors Manufacturing, said he acquired new information and encouraged firms to practice what they learnt from the workshop in their own interest.

“SON is working for the benefit of firms. Standard is what we need to grow and I call on other participants to put what they have learnt to practice,” he said.

Mrs Nwaoma Olujie, Coordinator of SON in Anambra, said SON was only doing advocacy and that it would take a legislation of the Federal Government to enforce standards in environment.

She commended firms for their eagerness to embrace SON standard certification and promised to continue to provide regulatory support to enhance their viability and competitiveness both locally and internationally.
