SON Educates Local Producers On Quality Compliance

The Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has embarked on educating producers of locally made products, service providers and consumer groups to encourage environmental friendly management techniques and quality products.

Mr Dauda Yakubu, the Northwest Regional Director of SON, said this on Thursday in Sokoto at a one-day public sensitisation campaign organised for stakeholders and the general public.

Yakubu said the programme was part of the organisation’s efforts geared towards ensuring production of quality products and services in promoting environmental management systems among industry owners.

He encouraged the public to insist on quality products with SON quality mark, stressing that the mark of quality helped organisations to create wealth, build trust and stand out in the pack.

He educated the gathering on the need to contact stakeholders, patronise qualitative goods and safe products, noting that this would safeguard them from the effects of unsafe products.

The director said the agency’s mandate was to educate the public on the dangers of substandard products in the country and build a nation with sustainable economy.

He further stated that the mandate included safeguarding people’s lives and property from the impacts of substandard products through consumer education.

He underscored the importance of environmental sustainability on productions and management process, stressing that best practices attracted customers satisfaction and patronage at all times.

“Increased awareness on quality and environmental management system has the key roles in enhancing organisations’ performance, process and procedures efficiency.

“It ensures consistent meeting up customers’ demands and regulatory requirements that enhanced their satisfaction in an environmentally sustainable manner,” he said.

He said the participants were from the rural and urban centres with view to educating them and creating more awareness on all category of products and service with communities in the country.

He added that quality and environmental management system standards were generic and applicable to any organisation, regardless of its type, size or the product or services provided.

Sokoto and Zamfara state Coordinator of SON, Malam Bello Bosso, said the event targeted more than 150 participants from Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and Kebbi states, to create awareness on International Organisation for Standards which set frameworks on environmental standards.

Bosso said the agency intensified efforts to ensure better coordination processes, improve communication between levels and functions of organisations as well as develop and improve the capacity of organisations and the people, to deliver desired results.

Alhaji Sani Hamidu, the Director of Commercials in the Sokoto State Ministry of Commerce, said the government collaborated with SON and other regulatory agencies to promote quality products and services.

Hamidu said small scale producers and service providers were being encouraged by government to access certifications and produce good and qualitative products.

The lead facilitator, Mr Pual Pankis, from Interacess Project Limited, delivered lectures on best management practices and quality certifications.

The event witnessed interactive sessions with questions and answers.
