S / Africa Top Executive Resigns Amid Zuma-linked Corruption Scandal

A top executive from South Africa’s state-owned power utility Eskom resigned Friday amid corruption allegations, two days after scandal-hit Jacob Zuma stepped down from the presidency.
Matshela Koko is accused of participating in Zuma-led “state capture” by using Eskom’s financial resources to invest in mining companies owned by a controversial wealthy Indian business family, the Guptas, who are closely linked to Zuma.

In his resignation letter, however, Koko said that he was stepping down “without any admission of wrongdoing.”

Friday’s letter marks the second time in two months that Koko was in danger of being fired from the troubled power utility, which reportedly faces imminent bankruptcy due to mismanagement.
Koko, who served as Eskom’s acting chief executive until he was suspended after a disciplinary hearing for nepotism and corruption in December, had been reinstated as head of generation in January.
Koko is an ally of Zuma, who is accused of allowing “state capture” by the Guptas by using his political power to grant them lucrative deals

and possibly influence ministerial appointments.
South African police on Monday issued arrests warrants for at two Gupta brothers close to Zuma,  Ajay and Atul, who reportedly fled the country.
