Prof. Yohanna Izam, Vice-Chancellor of Plateau State University (PLASU), says the reliability of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) will enhance the concept of project management and timely delivery in the built industry.
Izam said this at the 18th Induction of New Builders, of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) on Thursday in Abuja.
According to the professor, BIM is the way to go for the built industry to advance with global trends.
He said all other sectors were adapting the ICT in improving their work and the construction industry should not be the last to key into it.
“In the medical profession today, computers are used to diagnose diseases and proffer solutions, even in agriculture technology is used.
“Apart from giving a digital presentation of building projects, it affords all stakeholders to assess the same information, teamwork is encouraged and enhances partnerships among all stakeholders.
“It promotes better project quality and performance and reduce construction costs and apart from these generate revenue by creating a new set of entrepreneurs,’’ Izam said.
He called on all inductees to brace up with the model and constantly improve their skill by attending workshops and training adding that all these would help the sector reduce the incidence of building collapses.
Izam also called for an attitudinal change of all professional to key into new technologies that would advance the built industry calling for collaboration and partnership among all professionals in the sector.
On his part, Mr Peter Kuroshi, Registrar CORBON charged the inductees to always uphold the standards of professional excellence.
“I always tell inductees that the choice to be a Builder is not in any way a mistake. There will be challenges in the course of practice, but the future holds rewards for patience and diligence work.
“I urge you all to go out there to render optimal professional services and be role models for other prospective Builders. Striving towards loftier heights is the greatest favour you can do to yourself.
One of our expectations of the council is that you will continually acquire knowledge and develop your skills, especially in areas relevant to the Building Profession.
“Cultivating the attitude of attending conferences and workshop, frequent reading, and interact with other professionals can only make you become a better Professional,’’ Kuroshi advised.
Stressing on the commitment of the council to set a high professional standard in the built environment, Prof. Kabir Bala, Chairman CORBON, said in his remarks that the council was disposed to collaborating with other stakeholders.
He said the collaboration was sure to achieve better project quality, faster project delivery, reduced wastages and reduced construction costs among other benefits.
Bala, however, urged inductees not to rely on their current ability but to work tirelessly in acquiring new knowledge and skills that the fourth industrial revolution would demand.
“CORBON, as a regulatory body has the primary responsibility of registering and licensing personnel that can practice the profession and all registered Builders are required to adhere to the minimum building production management standards.
“The practice instrument inductees are receiving today symbolises the minimum standards of practice and code of professional conduct. Council is resetting professional standards to address the challenge of substandard building works.’’
He added that in the coming year the council would produce a builders practice note that would address issues like projects quality, project health and safety management, construction programmes among other standards.
Bala said all these are efforts intended at addressing the challenge of quackery in the construction sector and improving the quality of building works and buildings in Nigeria.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that over 250 persons were inducted into the council.
