One Dead, Others Injured As IPOB Clash with Security Agents

A clash between the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) and some security agents, police and soldiers have reportedly left on person dead while several others sustained several degrees of injuries.

The clash which occurred as a result of continued anti-election campaign by IPOB’s Kanu Nnamdi  on Wednesday, August 16 in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

The security agents who got hints about the Nnamdi Kanu scheduled  visit to the area in furtherance of his anti-election campaign laid seige on Ekwulobia to take charge of the security situation.

It was reported that the situation degenerated into a clash with one member of IPOb killed.

A source said: “The security operatives came in 14 trucks. But despite the heavy presence of security in the area, the IPOB members were still parading the area, singing and chanting Biafran songs.

“The Biafran flags, caps, shirts and other items being sold by some youths were seized and burnt by the security operatives.

“The situation angered the IPOB members and they tried to attack the security operatives who tear-gassed everybody and in the process, one of their (IPOB) members was killed.”

The police however denied that anyone was killed in the confrontation.

Nkeiruka Nwode who is the spokesperson of the Anambra state police command said it received a complaint that the secessionists were breaching the peace of the are.

She said: “There was nothing like that (death). The presence of the security men was to secure the people of the area from being attacked by hoodlums.

Her statement read in part: “A complaint was received by the police that there was a gathering and blockage of road by some people at Central School, Ekwulobia in Aguata LGA.

“The Police with other security agencies on joint patrol went to the scene, dispersed and cleared the road peacefully without any clash.

“However, normalcy has been restored and people are going about their business without any threat or molestation.”

Kanu has not showed up as at the time of the confrontation. Meanwhile, the youth wing of Igbo socio-political organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo gave reasons why Kanu and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) are agitating.

Reports have it that the group said youths in south east are not well being catered for by the political parties.
