Omuaran People Lament Neglect By INEC Registration Officials

The people of Omuaran in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State has lamented the lackadaisical attitude of staff of the Independent Electoral Commission staff conducting registration for them.

Oladapo Ibikunle a civil servant in the tow narrated his experience with the registration stressing the frustratiion that the people are made to pass through all in the name of seeking to perform their civic duty.

He said: “Those INEC guys do come to office like 2 times in a week. They came after 9.00am and after attending to 5 or 6 people, they would  close as early as 11.00am Some times they feign that they do not have sufficient registration materials.”

On this particular day, after several attempts at registering my name, eleven of us were on ground waiting to be registered but they abandoned us. I latter challenged all of them and they later cooked up a story that their system is not working again. But then two men came in a jeep, they seem to know the men. These INEC people conducted registration for them. Sad enough, one of the junior INEC officials came out and told us that we should have begged their “Oga” rather than challenging them. Eventually they all went out and left us in the cubicle they called office. This happened before my very eyes. Do I need to beg or tip before I’m being registered in my country?” He added.

Based on the information gathered, NATIONAL NEWSBEAM went to town to feel the pulse of the people during which one Amos,  a  vulcanizer in the town said that INEC people had made him waste more than enough time.

He said: “If not because we don’t know if they will trouble our children in school, I would have just sat at home and never register again. Thos INEC people are even very rude, they attend to people who come in big cars and leave us queuing in the sun for days. They work for only few hours and start complaining that their machine is bad, poor network and all sort of excuses. Please help us tell government that these people are doing the bidding of some politicians. I suspect that they would register only those whom they know could vote for them.”

Efforts to confirm situations with the Public Relations Officer of INEC, Mr Iyanda proved abortive as his telephone line was unavailable after several attempts.
