Wife of Kwara State Governor, Deaconess Omolewa Ahmed has called on parents to pay more attention to the training of their children especially the girl child whom she described as pillars of the society.
Mrs. Ahmed reiterated that no amount of investment put into a girl child could be a waste because they are essential companions of the male folks in the society.
Mrs Bukola Akinleye, who represented the first lady at the International day of the girl child 2018 tagged “With Her: A Skilled Girl Force” said that a properly trained girl child is of value to a successful society.
In her welcome address the State coordinator of the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for all, CSACEFA, Hajia Nimat Labaeka said that the International day of the girl child is a celebration initiated by the United Nation that every 11th October be devoted t creating awareness on the need to curb gender inequalities in the society and address all other challenges facing the women folk especially the girl child.
She highlighted the various abuses facing the girl child in places of work, in the school and everywhere they go simply because of their gender which is why her NGO along with other civil societies are putting heads together to commemorate the day with children from all walks of life.
In her address, the Hon. Commisioner for Eduction, Hajia Bikis Oniyangi gave a background o the celebration that “On 19th December, 2011, the United Nations General Asembly passed a resolution 66/170 to declare 11th October every year as International Day of the Girl Child to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
She informed that the global community has in the last 15 years made significant progress to improve the life of the girl child adding that these investment is based on the fact that “If you educate a woman, you educate a nation” and that No woman, No Nation as it is popularly believed.
Oniyangi charged the girls in attendance that they must always have it at the back of their mind that there is nothing that a man can do that they cannot do better and that God actually expressed his wisdom by making women an essential supportive factor without which the men folk cannot exist.
