A Non Governmental organisation (NGO) Mohammed Ajia Ibrahim (MAI), has commenced eye screening for 5, 000 people in all the 16 local government areas in Kwara.
The medical outreach kicked off at Ajia Compound, Ilorin on Wednesday with free eye screening, treatment and provision of eye glasses to the people.
Speaking at the occasion, Mohammed Ajia-Ibrahim said MAI was borne out of passion and concern to help the less privileged people in the society.
“My foundation is borne out of concern to assist the less privileged in the society and we have rolled out series of programs to start in due course.
“Part of the program is health outreach we have embarked upon to help the people of the state to protect their eyes.
“We observed that eye is an essential organ in the body and a lot of people are having problems with their eyes and they cannot afford to treat them,” he said.
Ajia-Ibrahim said the program will take place in Offa, Isanlu-Isin, Oke-Onigbin, Omu Aran and Oro.
He said the next phase of the outreach will go to Ilofa, Araromi-Opin, Lafiaji, Share, Patigi, Kaiama and Baruten in Kwara North.
According to Ajia-Ibrahim, over 5, 000 people will be tested for any eye defect, treated of any ailment discovered and provide recommended eye glasses for those that require glasses to aid their sight.
“MAI is a foundation that was set up to take care of the health challenges of the less privileged people of Kwara.
“We know that government cannot do everything for the people, the medical outreach is our little contribution to the people of the State,” MAI founder said.
Ajia-Ibrahim, who expressed satisfaction with the turn of people at the eye screening, urged participants to adhere to the counsel on prevention and treatment by the medical personnel.
He advised the people of the state to prevent too much dust from entering into their eyes, adding that they should desist from exposing their eyes to direct light from the sun as it is dangerous to their eyes.
Ajia-Ibrahim promised to continue to render his services to the down trodden people of the state.
The eye screening was attended by the elderly people, middle age, school children and youths in Ilorin West and its environs.
