NGO Calls For Increased Awareness On Family Planning in Nigeria

An NGO, Awareness Initiative for Good Living, AIGL has emphasized the need to increase awareness on the need to embrace family planning methods in Nigeria.

Speaking during a media interactive session at the NUJ Press Centre, Ilorin on Friday, the Chairman of the project Mr Ajibola Wahab express the need to embrace the values of family planning as an essential tool for societal planning.

Ajibola reiterated the need for Traditional rulers to embrace family planning and educate their subjects about it, for governments to appreciate family planning and pay up requisite counterpart support funds while the press also assist in educating, enlightening and projecting the achievements of family planning in our society.

Ajibola said that his organization places focus of its operation to three sectors: Traditional rulers; The AIGL advocate the need for Traditional rulers’ support for family planning, Faith based organizations, Technocrats, that is government and it’s agencies as to make family planning a part of the state budget and to promptly release funds as may be required.

The chairman said: “Our advocacy to te government functionaries is basically on the need to create separate budget line, approve and release same for family planning. The essence of separate budget line is for family planning to be given a priority among other primary health care services, as the fund is meant to purchase consumables that are not provided along FP commodities.”

The Chairman lamented the exit of NURHI from Kwara to Lagos as a result of governments refusal to release counterpart funds for the operation of family planning programs despite the commitment of the project to training and retraining of family planning staf working with government

He solicited the assistance of the press in disseminating information about family planning and its essentialities in national planning and development.

In her own contributions, Hajia Shadia Asaju reiterated the importance of family planning to mothers, fathers, and children and to the society.

She said that A mother who embrace family planning will be able to gain her health, strength and be stable before having next child while the father too will experience less stress over his family because when challenges come, he is at the receiving end.

Asaju said that children in a planned family will enjoy all the good care, utilities and social needs that the society can provide adding that the role of famiy planning in the society cannot be over emphasized in the society.

The family planning expert also noted that family planning and advocacy goes hand in hand as it is not made mandatory but a matter of choice after explaining the advantages of all the various family planning methods by qualified family planning practitioners in authorized designated health facilities and that the programme is aimed at adults within age 15 and 49 usually refeered to as reproductive ages in the society.

She urged members of the public to ensure that they go to qualified health facilities whenever they need attention of family planning experts.
