The people of Moro in Moro Local Government area one of the five councils in the Emirate have cried out to the Kwara state government to bail them out of anti people’s policies in the council.

The people who made this call in reaction to a statement credited to the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari cautioning Kwara State governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq against grading of two traditional rulers; Ohoro of Shao and Oba of Jebba as traditional chiefs, Moro Concerned Elders Movement (MOCEM) told the government to ignore the warning.

Ilorin Emirate Council in a statement signed by Alhaji Woru Mohammed, Magaji Nda of Ilorin on Friday,May 8,2020 cautioned Kwara state government against acceding to the request for the elevation of the traditional chiefs of Jebba and Shao in Moro local government area of the state.

According to the statement, “The council reminded the government of the fact that all traditional chiefs in the five local government areas (Ilorin West, Ilorin East, Ilorin South, Asa and Moro) that made up Ilorin Ilorin Emirate are lesser chiefs under the Emir of Ilorin.

Woru posited that “unless the Nigeria’s  1999 constitution is amended all 774 local governments including Moro local government shall continue to remain where they are despite their political religion and tribal differences.

“Finally, I therefore, appeal to agitators from Moro local government and their cohorts, especially the students to focus more on their educational pursuit being  potential leaders of tommorow”, Woru said.

However, MOCEM in a statement signed jointly by Alhaji Isiaka Jimoh, Dr Bolaji Afolabi and Chief Sunday Oyebiyi, President, General Secretary and Director of Publicity respectively said, “We hereby plead with the dynamic Government of His Excellency, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to totally ignore the “Caution” of the Ilorin Emirate Council through Saliu Woru Mohammed, because it is anti-people and unconstitutional.”

It also appealed to the government “to implement immediately it White Paper of 17th December, 1987 which abolished the appointment of District Heads for Moro local government area from Ilorin and which henceforth directs that such appointments be made from among the indigenes of local government area.

“Immediate implementation of the various Court judgments in favour of Moro local government area on traditional Institution, such as the judgments in the suit No KWS/231/894 of 22/10/1997 delivered by Hon. Justice Afolabi Ibiwoye as well as that of Hon Justice Oluyemisi Ajayi.

“Immediate remedy to the degrading injustice done to Moro local government area, by first restoring the Ohoro of Shao and Oba of Jebba to their pre-1984 status and subsequent elevation to first class status to meet up with their counterparts like Olusin of Isin, Olupako of Share, Olosi of Osi etc, while Moro local government traditional council should be created to be made up of our indigenous Traditional rulers like other parts of Kwara state.”

The Movement also called on the government to give recognition to other traditional rulers in major towns in the council area such as Bode-Saadu, headquarter of the council, Okutala, Oloru, Bielesin, Malete and others while the five percent allocation which had hitherto been deducted for the Emir of Ilorin from the monthly allocation of Moro local government council fund should be stopped henceforth.
