Let’s Revive Ailing Businesses in Kwara – Shippers Association

Shippers' Association with Harmony Holdings Management during the visit

The untimely death, ailing situation and non-viability of companies in Kwara State has caught the attention of the National Shipper’s Association, Kwara branch, therefore, calling on the state government to rise above the challenge in the interest of the state and nation at large.

The call was made during a familiarization tour of the Association to Harmony Holdings Ltd on Wednesday at their head office in Ilorin.
Speaking during the visit, Alhaji Abdulkadri Alanamu, President of Nigerian Shippers Association, Kwara State chapter said that despite the enormous potentials in the state, the neglect of companies has deprived them desired government support and resultant relocation either outside the country or to a more investment-friendly state.

Alanamu said that a visit to Harmony Holdings became necessary because the company is known to be saddled with the responsibility of improving the economic viability and emancipation of Kwara State, which can only be done through assistance towards Kwara based businesses to improve on their viability and profitable.

He highlighted the past efforts of the Association in collaborating with the University of Ilorin in the cultivation of Jethropha and other roles of his Association for which it was formed by the Nigerian Shippers Council in the development in the coordination of the entire port activities, ensuring the emancipation of port and non port related activities.

Nigerian Shippers’ Council was formed in 1978 to curb the deteriorating quality of shipping services and unmitigated increases in Ocean freight rates by foreign ship owners who operated scheduled liner services to Nigerian ports.
Citing cases of Doyin Group, Tate and Lyle and others that had gone moribound, Alanamu said that there are lot that Kwara State government, through the Harmony holdings can do to revive ailing companies and create enabling environment for incoming and existing ones in the state.

In his response, the General Manager, Harmony Holdings, Femi Ajibade expressed appreciation for the visit of the shippers Association and that it availed him an opportunity to know the relationship between the Shippers’ Council and the various associations formed by it.

Ajibade promised to present all issues raised by the President of the Shippers Association and present same to the governing board of his company adding that he would also seek that Harmony holdings become a member of the Association to facilitate a synergy in achieving the task ahead of them.

He used the opportunity to correct the impression that all companies owned by the Kwara State Government is being managed by the holdings adding that Harmony Holding, a formation of Kwara State Government is saddled with the responsibility of managing only certain government establishments within its purview.

Earlier, the Secretary General of Nigerian Shippers’ Association, Kwara Chapter, Prince Saheed Muritala Arinpooye xpressed appreciation to Harmony Holdings for finding time to welcome to and listen to the Association.
He explained the need for visitations to stake holders which was the reason the Association paid a courtesy call on those whom they deem important as participating in the bid to revamp ailing businesses in Kwara State.
