Kwara CP Threatens Court Action Against Policemen Extorting Money With Gun In Hand For Armed Robbery

The Commissioner of Police, Kwara Command, Mr Kayode Egbetokun has said restated his commitment to community policing as a best-policing practice internationally.

Egbetokun reiterated the need for a mutual working relationship between the civil populace and the police in a way that the people readily volunteer information that could be useful in crime prevention and control.

The Police Commissioner, who addressed a press briefing on Tuesday said that he has been informed of the atrocities of some officers who extort money from the people while holding guns, adding that any erring officer caught engaging in such practice will be charged to court for armed robbery.

Kayode Egbetokun said that though the police has a statutory role of stopping and searching persons, such duty does not go beyond ensuring that there is adequate security in society.

He read the riot act to his officers that he would not condone any act of cashing on the ignorance of the people to exploit them criminally.

The CP who said he had gotten pile-up of reports about the misconducts of his officers lamented that such acts will only said: “On my assumption of duty as CP, Kwara Command. I made it clear that the command under my watch will be committed to ideals of modern policing. A policing methodology that is community-based, intelligence-led and technology driven. All Area commanders and DPOs have since been tasked to embrace the philosophy of community-oriented policing.”

“Our intelligence is been revitalized to provide credible intelligence to enhance the quality of our decisions with respect to our operations.”

Egbetokun also said that members of the society had informed hm of the spate or harassment of undergraduates and young men by the police, who in the name of stop and search, extort money from these young people accusing them of Yahoo Yahoo, one offense or the other.

He said: “My attention has been drawn to a media report about police extortion on ur high ways. Some policemen on patrol, not all, have been reported to be stopping young men on the road and searching their phones on suspicion that they are internet fraudsters known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’. In some cases, the young men, mostly undergraduates are asked to part with as little or as much as N2,000,000 for their release. The command frowns at  ths ugly trend and will stop at nothing in identifying and dealing with the culprits accordingly.”

“All policemen in this command especially patrolmen are constantly been reminded that extorting while bearing firearms completes the ingredient of the offense of armed robbery. Henceforth, any policeman found to be engaging in any form of extortion while armed on the high way will be arrested, detained and if found guilty  shall be dismissed  and charged with armed robbery”

The police boss gave out some numbers which aggrieved members of te public can call to report illegal acts of his officer which include 09033871133, 07015338157 and 08070734277 adding that the police will serve the community better if there is a collaboration between the two, that is the people and the police.

“The gap between the police and the community is often exploited by criminals to the disadvantage of the citizens. Criminals hardly operate where the police and the community collaborate.”
