Kwara State House of Assembly has expressed its readiness to partner sports stakeholders in the development of sports at the grassroots in the state.

The Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Yakubu Danladi Salihu gave this assurance when the Main Organising Committee of the 7th Kwara State Sports Festival paid him a visit.

The Speaker, who was represented by the Chairman House Committee on Youth, Sports, Culture, Tourism and Information, Hon Awolola Ayokunle Olumide, noted that it was in that regard the House passed the Kwara State Sports Commission Bill into Law, Thursday this week.

The Speaker emphasised the importance of sports as a unifying factor, especially in multicultural societies like Nigeria.

He said every child was naturally endowed with one sports talent or the other, adding that it was necessary for the state to tap and nurture such talents to excellence and media winning levels.

The Speaker assured the Main Organising Committee that the House would be actively involved in ensuring that the festival was successful.

The leader of the Main Organising Committee, Alhaji Ahmed Adio, said the sports festival last held in 2005 was being revived to enhance discovery of raw talents that could be nurtured to world-class standards.

Adio, who was the captain of the Nigerian contingent to the 1980 Moscow Olympics, recalled that it was through such sports festivals that he and other talents were discovered.

He was optimistic that through the forthcoming sports festival Kwara would discover new talents that would do the state and the country proud in the future.

The festival is scheduled to hold in January 2020.
