A chairmanship candidate in the forthcoming election of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) elections, Abdullahi Dare Akogun, has expressed readiness to partner with Kwara state government in seeking better life and good welfare for journalists in the state.

Akogun who made this promise on Monday at the flag-off of his campaign at the Correspondents Chapel while reacting to insinuations that he might work against government reiterated that there is no way NUJ leadership would work against the government because “as Journalists, we are the bridge between the people and the government.”

“If we chose an antigovernment posture, it means we would not balance the scale as a bridge and that will not be in the interest of the people. We must work in partnership, being fair to government in reporting its activities to the people.”

The chairmanship hopeful in his characteristic gesture arrived the chapel with a team of joyful supporters singing melodious songs which announced his presence.

Members of the correspondents, who observed the scenario said it is a deviation from past system in which leadership is fixed rather than by election adding that his move shows seriousness and commitment to seek the will of the people.

Abdullahi Dare Akogun, who said he seeks the opportunity to serve other colleagues as the chairman of the state council of NUJ adding that he is not the best, but rather to render himself in putting things in proper perspective.

“I believe the current executive have done their best within their ability, God knows, we all have our limitations.

“However where they erred, I have decided to make corrections, so that we can at least have a desired change for a Council of our dream. To err is human, no man is perfect

“If I have your mandate to lead this Council as Chairman, i promise to run an all inclusive government in which all the executives and members will be responsible for the success of our mission statement and the vision i have for the council in the next three years” Akogun said.

The ‘Radio General’ as he is foldly called said welfare of members shall be his prime focus as well as all other requirements that will make members walk tall in the state and the country as a whole, and be proud to call the union their own, wherever they find themselves.

“If i have your mandate, our administration shall take care of the interest of the correspondents’ by making sure we have an Ex Officio member from among you” He said.
