Residents of Ureje Bridge in Ado-Ekiti, capital city of Ekiti State have applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for completion of the construction works, on the collapsed Bridge, along Ado Ekiti- Ondo State federal highway,
The bridge after the completion was made opened to public use on Monday. after six weeks closure
The elated residents also commended the Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, legal icon, Chief Afe Babalola and Chairman, House of Rep Committee on FERMA, Chief Femi Bamisile, for their efforts at ensuring timely rehabilitation of the bridge.
Some of the residents, a driver, Mr Samuel Olayemi, a student, Motunrayo Adeola and a trader, Mrs and regular traveller Marcus Nwosu, said the repair work on the bridge has not only given them optimism in government but an opportunity for improved transportation.
Mr Akinola Olufemi, a Civil Engineer and Project Director of Dipcrest Intergrated Services Limited, the construction company that handled the project, assured that the job is done with utmost quality for durability.
He said, “the repair works on the project, after its award, by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, began on June 1, 2020 and was completed on Saturday, July 18, 2020.
According to him,” the project also covered concertized rehabilitation of some metres of the road on both sides adjourning the bridge , with asphalt overlay, so as to make it stronger”
He disclosed that Ureje bridge was not the only distressed bridge slated for rehabilitation ,added that the company also had FG’s mandate to repair others.
He appreciated the residents and travellers for their cooperation and understanding during this period which brought inconvenience for road users.
Ureje bridge, which links Ekiti with Ondo and Kogi states, including Abuja and other parts of the country, had last year, given way to heavy flooding which overran it late last year, after about two -days of torrential rain that left many parts of Ado Ekiti submerged in water.
Tertiary institutions such as the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Afe Babalola University, Government College, Ado EKITI are located in the area.
The old bridge of century has become a death trap to both motorists and pedestrians, which has claimed lives, due to its narrowness and flood during raining season.
