EKITI GOVT ARRESTS, FINES 13 N5,000 EACH FOR FLOUTING ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS

13 people were arrested on Monday in Ado metropolis, the capital of Ekiti State by Environmental and Sanitation officers for the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Chief Bisi Kolawole who made this known in Ado Ekiti, lamented that in spite of several efforts at sensitizing the people on the health hazards of living in dirty and unhygienic environments, some recalcitrant people persisted in what he called ”the despicable act of arbitrarily dumping refuse on road medians”.
Chief Kolawole explained that the offenders were apprehended in the early hours of the day, before daybreak, adding that they were fined a sum of five thousand Naira only as punishment and to serve as deterrence against further similar infraction.
Stressing that government officials would continue to work round the clock to ensure that the state remained clean and hygienic for habitation, the commissioner emphasized that anyone caught flouting environmental laws would be dealt with accordingly adding that there would be no sacred cow.
Kolawole said Dino Bins have been strategically placed across the Ado metropolis for proper refuse disposal, stressing that stakeholders must support the efforts of government to achieve the desired result.
