CPN to begin clampdown on unregistered IT professionals

The Computer Professional Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) says it has been given the matching order by the Ministry of Education to begin the clampdown on unregistered IT professionals in the country.

Prof. Charles Uwadia, President of the council made this known at a media forum in Abuja on Thursday.

Uwadia said the council had over 5,000 practising professionals who were not registered while calling on them to do the needful before the operation would begin.

According to him, we try to get members and persuade them to register before practicing in the country.

“We are empowered by the Act establishing the council to bring unregistered professionals to book.

“Anyone not known by CPN is not expected to practice in Nigeria. Any organisation that has to do with IT and employed unprofessional persons are not helping the country.

” The Ministry of Education has now given us the backing to clampdown on unregistered IT professionals in the country and we will soon start to bring them to book,” he said.

Uwadia, however, called on companies to always request evidence of registration from professional bodies before employing any IT expert.

Similarly, Mr Allwell Achumba, Registrar of the council said the council would continue to strengthen its relationship with NUC and NCCE on accreditation of computer science and engineering in tertiary institutions.

He said this would enable the council to determine the standards of knowledge and skills to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the computing profession.

Also, Mr Kole Jagun, Vice President of the council noted that it was collaborating with the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to monitor and man the over 700 CBT centres for the conduct of the 2020 UTME.

” CPN was appointed by JAMB as technical partner for the monitoring of the CCTV cameras in all the UTME CBT centres nationwide.

” This is because our examinations have to be credible and to do this we have to partner to use technology to deliver exams effectively and efficiently as well as smoothen all the rough edges in the conduct of examinations using computers.”

Prof. Adeshina Sodiya, President, Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) stressed the need for Nigerians in the field of Information Technology to as a matter of urgency register to be able to qualify to practice anywhere in the country.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the council was established through Act No 49 of 1993 and passed into law on June 10,1993, charged with the regulation, control and supervision of the computing profession and practice.

The council is under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education, with the National Assembly having an oversight functions over it.

The council is set to hold its annual IT Assembly between April 15 and 16 on the theme: Adoption of 5G in Nigeria: The Technological and Regulatory Challenges
