COVID-19: No Resumption Date Yet For University of Ilorin – VC

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, has said that there is no date is yet fixed for the resumption of academic activities by students of the University who have been kept off-campus since the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria.

Abdulkareem stated this on Thursday August 13, 2020 while featuring on a Radio programme featuring the multiple award-winning Professor of Chemical Engineering who responded to questions on various aspects of the University administration and system, especially with regards to the new normal imposed by the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Vice-Chancellor, explained that since the Federal Government is yet to give a specific date for institutions of higher learning in the country to open their gates to their students, the University of Ilorin would also remain closed to students pending the directives of the constituted authorities.

Prof. Abdulkareem, however, expressed the preparedness of the University to welcome her students back to campus for the completion of the rest of the 2019/2020 academic session and the subsequent new session.

He said that every arrangement is being perfected to ensure that the campus is made safe and conducive for members of the University community.

The Vice-Chancellor also said that arrangement was also being perfected towards ensuring that the processes of admitting new students begin as stated by the concerned authorities adding that it is gratifying that the University remains the choice of the greatest number of intending students.

Prof. Abdulkareem expressed his satisfaction that some members of staff of the University are employed to serve as vice-chancellors of some sister universities among other positions stating that he was not in anyway surprised because in his words, the University of Ilorin is “a training ground not only in the field of academic but also in leadership.”

He explained that the University, being a cosmopolitan institution, which attracts staff and students from every nook and cranny of Nigeria, would certainly continue to turn out leaders whose services would be sought by any institution that desires progress.

On the modalities of teaching and learning when schools eventually resume, while still observing the medical advisories on Coronavirus pandemic, the Vice-Chancellor explained that the University is almost completing the total campus internet connectivity, which he said would facilitate the reception of internet from everywhere across the campus of the University.

He added that the gigantic improvement in internet connectivity across the University campus is being pursued in preparation for the adoption of what he called the new normal way of conducting teaching and learning in which there would be minimal contact between lecturers and their students.

Prof. Abdulkareem congratulated the management and staff of the Directorate of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, for consistently keeping members of the University community and the institution’s relevant publics and indeed the general public informed of the activities of the University before, during and after the lockdown occasioned by the Coronavirus pandemic.

While expressing the readiness of the University management to offer the station more support, Prof. Abdulkareem assured his interviewers that the authorities of the institution would also explore the possibility of establishing a sustainable Campus TV as done by a few sister universities.
