Community Policing; Stakeholders strategizes on how to secure Kwara

A Professor of law, Dakas Dakas has advised Kwara State government to be proactive in securing the state despite the peace that ensued in the state.

Dakas of University of Jos said that Kwara is peaceful but must take proactive steps address security threats that abound close to the state as prevention against spillover effect.

At a state security summit organized by the Kwara State government which held at Kwara Hotels on Thursday in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Represented Tunde Aremu a director in the state civil service, Professor Dakas called for a regime of accountability, respect for rules of engagement, and more support for the security agencies

Also another resource person, Professor Hassan Salihu of the University of Ilorin joined in calling on the public to see security as a joint project to be owned by all.

Salihu was of the opinion that neglect of early morning signs is the bane of insecurity in the country which trickles down to lapses experienced in the state.

The Professor of Political science said that politicians must learn to draw the line between politics, campaign period and time of governance adding once a government is put in place, politicking must stop while governance must start immediately.

He called on all stakeholders to sidestep their differences and build a sustainable system that works for all while calling for more capacity building for the security agencies and other personnel of government in charge of security matters.

Security chiefs in the state who made contributions applauded the dialogue initiative but called on the masses to always speak up when they see danger signs around them commending the government for the security dialogue which they described as timely.

In his contribution, the Director, Kwara Command of the Directorate of State Security Services, Steve Ajege described the security dialogue as signaling Governor AbdulRazaq’s readiness to further secure the state.

He called on parents to revisit the issue of family value and discipline and to work with security agencies to cut crime rate in the society.

The state Police Commissioner, Kayode Egbetokun hinted that community policing is a policy initiative in the pipeline calling for support and that he would rely heavily on local personnel and intelligence gathering.

Other security agencies spoke in similar pattern, with the NDLEA calling on parents to pay attention to the activities of their children and lamenting the rising rate of drug abuse.

The state Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Isyaku Sharu, in his contribution advised youths to stop patronizing politicians with ill gotten wealth.

He lamented a case of misguided youths who were mobilized to hail a suspect standing trial saying it is not just an embarrassment to the state but also a national disgrace, calling for question on the integrity of the so called youths.

 

The Emir of Ilorin and chairman of the state traditional council Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari called on the Nigerian government to make better use of the traditional institutions as did the colonial masters.

 

Gambari commended the government for the dialogue, calling for better welfare for members of the security agencies and funding for traditional institutions to boost communal peace.

 

Representing religious leaders in the state, Bishop Sunday Adewole and Prof Lanre Yusuf , urged the government to build its security strategies around the traditional and religious institutions adding that prayers must not be left out.

 

The two religious leaders called for tolerance and harmony and restoration of religious and family values.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council in her contribution expressed disclosed the readiness to partner with the government to strengthen security in the State.

The Chairman, who was represented by his vice, Mallam Mustafa Abubakar assured the governor, His Excellency Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, that the council’s media coverage and reportage of the initiative at all times.

Comrade Umar, who commended the governor for being proactive in approach to tackle security challenges in the state also welcome and support the initiative saying it will go a long way in reducing and helping the state in her drive  towards strengthening the security architecture.

“This initiative , we believe will go a long way in securing the lives and properties of all the people and residents of the state”.

The Chairman , who also pleaded that the initiatives should be done within the ambit of the law, urged the governor to resuscitate “neighbourhood watch” in every community as it was the practice in the years back

According to him,  let me advise that the government should engage more with the youths in the drive to sustain the initiative.

 

Earlier in his opening remarks, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State attributed that social inclusion, youth’s empowerment, and timely administration of justice are key to fostering peace and development in any society.

 

“We will definitely continue to give the necessary and complementary logistic support to our security agencies. However, we believe that security is a broad concept that goes beyond arming the various security agencies or hanging cameras everywhere,” according to AbdulRazaq’s address at the one-day multi-stakeholder  security dialogue in Ilorin, the state capital.

 

“We feel strongly that securing our society requires inclusion and empowerment of all the segments of our society. It involves guaranteeing social justice for everyone. It involves ensuring that no child is left behind in every developmental agenda. And it involves making sure that the justice system is not unduly slow or deliberately tilted against anyone.”

 

He said the dialogue was a follow up to a recent security meeting of the Governors in the north central region and security developments in other parts of the country.

 

AbdulRazaq commended the security agencies and traditional rulers for their efforts to keep the peace in Kwara.

 

He said the administration is introducing social investment programmes to ensure that no one is left behind and guarantee peace and harmony.

 

“Hunger and poverty are catalysts for crimes and they must be addressed headlong,” the Governor said, adding that the dialogue had been called to harvest the views of all the stakeholders in the state.
