Community Leader Faults Kwara Governor Over KWASU VC Appointment

Oluseyi Dasilva

A community leader, Chief Bayo Fabiyi has described the appointment of Professor Mohammed Akanbi as the Vice Chancellor of Kwara State University, Ilorin describing it as ethnic biased and sentimental

Fabiyi who is also coordinator of Oodua People’s Congress, Kwara State said that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has been very equitable in all his appointments and has won the heart of all Kwarans but sent fears into the heart of supporters from other parts of Kwara state by reason of the bias shown in the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor of the state university.

The high Chief who is a Prince of Oro Agor in Ifelodun local government area of Kwara state said that from empirical studies, Ilorin had benefitted immensely from appointments since 1999 saying that late Governor Lawal was in power for four years after which Dr Bukola Saraki came, and spent eight years without mixing the tenure with someone from another zone in the state.

He also said that if Governor AbdulRazaq will be fair and equitable as he had been demostrating, he should have known that the former Vice Chancellor, Professor Rasheed Na’Allah was there for two terms of ten years and therefore his successor should not again come from the same zone and axis, ‘Afin’ in Ilorin Central.

He added that Kwara is made up of Ilorin, Igbomina, Ibolo, Nupe and other tribes all of who are equally entitled to the opportunity of heading the institution to promote equity and fairplay.

He advised that though the decision over the appointment cannot be reversed, Governor AbdulRazaq should not allow some elements in the society to pressurize him into making sentimental and ethnic decisions that can cause him to lose support and respect from those who love him and had invested their support in his political pursuit.

Fabiyi said that he appreciated the efforts of government in the fight against COVID 19 pandemic advising that he should not relent in the campaign to ensure Kwara is not bedeviled by the virus like it does in nations where despite their advancement in science, they were killed in drones.
