Breast Cancer Awareness:  Men Too Are Vulnerable – Medical Practitioner

 

A medical practitioner with the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Dr Halimat Akande has stated that men too are vulnerable to death through cancer hence the need for check-ups to know status like women should.

Dr Akande who was responding to questions at a street walk to celebrate Breast Cancer awareness, Pink Day 2019 said that though the percentage of men vulnerability is relatively low but it doesn’t mean that men are free from the scorge of cancer adding “Men to can die of Breast Cancer, though the percentage is statistically low.”

The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, MWAN,  had in conjunction with Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ had collaboratively organized an awareness walk to major markets in Ilorin to sensitize women on the danger of breast cancer on Saturday.

At the street walk which took off at the Maternity wing of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, UITH, Amilegbe, Ilorin through to Ipata market, Ojagbo and other markets had medical practiotioners, Federation of Moslim Women Association of Nigeria, FOMWAN, Civil Society for Cancer Eradication in Nigeria, CiSCANEN, as well as National Association of Women Journalists in Nigeria, NAWOJ, the participants took time to enlighten members of the public on the need for early detection of cancer symptoms and prevention methods.

Speaking on the importance of the awareness campaign, the Immediate past Deputy National President of National Association of Women Journalist in Nigeria, Hajia Bilquees Modupe Oladimeji said that the awareness is important so as to reduce the number of woman who dies as a result of breast cancer and related causes.

Oladimeji expressed that if detected early, death through breast is avoidable adding that the awareness walk is aimed at teaching the people how to examine themselves, detect symptoms of cancer-causing lumps and see medical doctors for breast cancer examination and appropriate steps to early detection.

Earlier,  speaking at the street walk, Dr Adenike Durotoye, President Medical Women Association, Kwara State branch, who explained though the vulnerability of breast cancer starts from the age of forty in women but added that in recent days, people with lower ages are detected as having this virus reiterating that some of the early noticeable symptoms of breast cancer can be changed in size, changes in colour, discharges from nipples, bleeding and swollen ampit.

She further observed that many of the market women are often too busy doing business or related routines at the expense of their health adding that the awareness walk is aimed at taking the campaign close to the people so that a lot of avoidable death can be curbed in its early stages.

She advised that women should try to do mammogram at least every year, perhaps fixing it as part of their yearly birthday activity so that they would not forget such an issue that affects their live so easily.

Members of the Ilorin Medical Students Association, ILUMSA who participated in the walk commended the organizers of the event and remarked that it was a successful outing represented by some of its members as well as the publicity secretary and President of the Association.
