Border Closure: Customs ask Nigerians to focus on gains, calls for restraint

Nigerians have been urged to remain committed and ensure total support for the closure of the border to achieve better economic prosperity and security in the country.

 

The Assistant Comptroller General of Customs in charge of borders operations in  Kwara state, Aminu Dahiru made the call while speaking with journalists in Ilorin.

 

According to him the closure of the border will improve the economic well being of the generality of Nigerians.

 

Dahiru said the major issues with the activities at the borders is the smuggling of foreign rice which does not add any value to the people of the country.

 

He explained that the Republic of Benin with 12million population and rated the 6th largest rice importer in the world does not have a market for the said products.

 

Dahiru noted that most of the smuggled rice pay all charges to the Republic of Benin and other countries but deny Nigeria its .own benefit.

 

He maintained that the fiscal policy

allows the importation of rice cars, and other items through the seaports as well as the airports to enable government gets its revenues.

 

Dahiru said the continued use of land borders by smugglers will render the Seaports and other legal imports outlets useless.

 

He called on the people of Kwara state and Nigerians in general to support the federal government development plan to enable the country attained greatness.
