ATTACK ON CHURCHES: Tension Mounts In Ilorin As New Facts Emerge, Gov Ahmed Approves Investigation

New Facts are emerging on the circumstance surrounding the attack on churches at Taiwo Isale, Ilorin on the eve of new year.

Our correspondent who went to town spoke with a segment of the people over the issue and discovered that the reports filtering into town is different from what government presented.

Some of the boys residing at Taiwo Isale, whom the police fingered as being behind the attack debunked the allegations adding that they were being black mailed

The respondent said: “it would be foolish of anyone to think that we who  residing in Taiwo Isale would be the ones to mastermind attack on churches that had been with us since ages past. Aside this, many of our people attend these churches, is it possible for us to attack them and not be seen by at least someone who knows us? These people are just blackmailing us. Even the said good boys being names are not likely to be the ones. We saw them but couldn’t confront them, they are sophisticated. Aside this, we were at Quareeb to participate in the night programme, those attackers didn’t attack us directly, it was the teargas by security operatives that scattered us.”

Adijat, another respondent, a female Muslim who also participated in the Quareeb programme butressed the earlier claim that she too was at the venue and that tear gas was what chased everyone away.

She said “I don’t know what happened outside the premises, but inside where we were having our programme, there was no form of attack but we heard that people outside the fence were attacked and injured. I don’t know who the attackers were but they did not enter the premises of United Secondary School. It was the tear gas that made life uncomfortable that chased us away. Welater heard that some Christian ladies coming from night vigit were attacked and raped. I am not sure that the attackers are Muslims, no Muslim will engage in such attack.”

A cleric from one of the churches gave our correspondent an account that points to suspicion that the attackers were Muslims.

He said “I don’t know their religion, but as they wreck their havock, the chant Allahu Akbar, La iIlah and naturally, a worshipper from Catholic or ECWA will not be shouting Allahu Akbar, this is a language belonging to certain sect of religion, you can conclude it for yourself.. We even thought it was Boko Haram because the had sophisticated guns in their hands. People who heard sounds thought that it was knockouts or Banger until we saw that it was gun, being shot into the air

However, Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has given approval for the State Committee on Religious Matters to investigate the circumstances leading to the attack on worshippers by suspected miscreants on Monday, January 1, 2018, in Taiwo Isale Area of Ilorin, the state capital.

This came on the heel of keeping with Governor Ahmed’s pledge to religious leaders in the state during a meeting in his office last Tuesday in the aftermath of the attack.

According to Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, who announced the approval in a statement, the Committee, under the Chairmanship and Vice Chairmanship of Alhaji M. S. Koro and Chief P. A. O Olorunisola respectively, is to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the mayhem, ascertain the level of damage to lives and properties, identify the culprits in the crises and make adequate recommendations to Government.

Alhaji Gold said the Committee is expected to submit its report within two weeks.
