ASUU, UNIPORT branch calls for opening of secretariat closed by CV

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has decried the closure of its secretariat by the management of the University of Port Harcourt saying the act was unjust.

The branch UNIPORT Chairman, Dr Austen Sabo while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Friday said the welfare of academic staff of the university had been jeopardized following the closure.

Sado said the union had deployed every peaceful means to address the issues with the school management but this had led to no avail.

Sado, who also expressed concern over the termination of the appointment of a Professor in the University, Frank Ugiomoh over alleged meddlesomeness in the graduate programme of Fine Arts and Design department said the due process was not followed.

He explained that the Union had constituted a committee involving eminent scholars and discovered that the Professor was innocent.

” The case of termination of the appointment of Prof. Ugiomoh by the university is among the many displays of recklessness and abuse of power under the present Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ndowa Lale.

“For the sake of history, the case of the termination of the appointment of Ugiomoh is sear on the conscience of Prof. Lale who have turned the university to a fiefdom of naked display of arrogance unknown to humanity,” he said.

He therefore appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu to wade into the matter.

At as the filing of this report, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent made several efforts to reach the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Ndowa Lale but was unsuccessful.
