Armed forces Day: NANS calls for improved packag

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for an improved welfare personnel in the armed forces especially the soldiers at the forefront of the crusade against insurgency in the northeast and some other places where there are pockets of violence.

Mr Adeyemi Azeez, National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the association made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday.

Azeez also called for the immortalisation of the fallen heroes as well as decent and living wages to the soldiers.

“Without mincing words, today, 15th of January is a day set aside internationally to remember those who died in the line of duty while fighting to ensure the territorial integrity of our dear country whether on land, air or water is not breached or tampered with.

“As we converge at different centres throughout the nation to celebrate this day to honour the fallen and living heroes who gallantly risked and continue to risk their lives for the defence of the territorial integrity of the nation, we demand for an improved welfare package for our soldiers.

” We also demand equipment for our soldiers with needed battle tools to prosecute the war against terrorism and all form of insubordination.

” It is embarrassing and saddening to note that the welfare of our soldiers most importantly those at the forefront of the crusade against insurgency in the northeast and some other places has not been improved.

” It is worth stressing that contrary to the 10th line of our National Anthem which reads “the labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain”, nothing is being done to immortalise them.”
