Members of the Air Transport Service Senior Association of Nigeria (ATSSAN) and National Union of Air Traffic Employers (NUATE) at the Ilorin International airport yesterday joined their counterparts across the country to protest the concession of some Airports by the federal government.
Some members of the association were seen carrying placards with inscriptions such as; ‘No to concession because it is evil’, “Sirika must go – enemy of progress”, “No to Airport concessions” among others.
The Chairman of ATSSAN, Ilorin Chapter, Comrade Alonge Isaac, while speaking to our correspondent during that protest said they are all part of the government but what they are after is for things to work out well for all in the aviation industry.
According to Isaac: “It usually pain us when things are not working out fine. What is government mission for the concession of the airport? We are saying no to concession with one voice. We want the government to come to a roundtable with us and see how we can join hands to make sure that things work out perfectly.”
Also speaking is the Secretary of NUATE, Comrade Sanni Abdulazeez, who disclosed that the protest was supposed to hold in Abuja and Lagos alone but later got call late last night for all airport workers to join it.
“There is nothing wrong in concessions but due process must be followed, they should discuss with the workers too because they are also stakeholders. The government should come to a roundtable with the workers and seek their opinion. It is not a welcome idea for the government to just announce concession in the media without considering the interest of the workers and other stakeholders,” Abdulazeez said.
