The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu has charged teachers across the country to maintain the safety of students while also ensuring the recovering of lost periods as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adamu made this known in Abuja on Tuesday at the commissioning of Annex office of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

The minister commended the management of TRCN on the erection of the new building complex saying it would address the accomodation problem of the council.

” TRCN, and especially it’s regulatory function, is very important, indeed central to government’s objective and desire for improving the quality of education in this country. And in this, TRCN has recorded commendable achievements, especially within the last four years.

” As you are aware, the government has given a deadline to all persons carrying out the duty of teaching in both private and public institutions in Nigeria to register with TRCN or risk losing their jobs, that deadline still stands.

“TRCN was winning the battle but the strike of the Corona virus pandemic and the resulting lockdown of activities all over the world created a major setback in the execution of government projects and initiatives in particular, the education sector was hit hard.

” However, with the partial ease of the lockdown, schools have partially resumed and a lot is expected of teachers in ensuring the safety of their students and also in the recovering lost periods of study.

” It is our belief and hope that TRCN will contribute its own quota in making sure things go well in our schools,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, Registrar, TRCN said although the pandemic had been a set back, but the council had achieved tremendous progress in the registration of teachers in the country.

Ajiboye said that no fewer than 36,000 candidates out of the over 44,000 registered candidates participated in its June examinations.

He noted that the exams was conducted in all states except Kaduna which would be conducted on Aug. 27 and 28, hoping that the number would increase tremendously after the conduct of its examinations in Kaduna.

” TRCN remains committed towards helping the Federal Government achieve laudable gains in quality education. As a teaching regulatory body, we have been working assiduously to see that all goes well with the teaching profession in Nigeria.

” We are very much aware of these these sayings that ” no nation can rise above the level of its education and that no education system can rise above its teachers and that the teachers hold the key to the door of sound education and sound education is the most critical instrument for change in any society.

” With this in mind, we at TRCN are assuring the minister that the council will do all that is within its power to see that professionalisation of teaching in Nigeria is taken seriously by teachers, institutions, and other stakeholders.”

He added that despite the lockdown, the council remained dogged towards the accomplishment of most of its critical scheduled programmes through online interaction and training.

Responding, Prof. Adamu Baikie, Chairman, Governing Council of TRCN said that the building is a fitting memorial for teachers who served the country selflessly, honourably and with dedication to rid the nation from the pangs of ignorance and illiteracy.

Baikie, who was represented by Dr Lydia Ginngina, Director, Education Support Service of the ministry, thanked the registrar and staff of the council for the achievement in the last four years.
