Actionaid Nigeria (AAN), a Non-governmental Organisation has commenced a three-day capacity building for women across 100 Women Rights Organisations to strengthen their rights capacity.

Mrs Ene Obi, Country Director, AAN at the opening session of the training in Abuja on Friday said the training would equip executives of the rights organisations with knowledge on network management and skills for effective advocacy.

Obi noted that the training which is for Nigeria’s women Voice and Leadership Nigeria (WVL-N) project was funded by the Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and would span through five years to engage local women in the country.

According to her, the aim is to increase the capacity of Local Women’s Rights Organisations and Network Movement in Nigeria to effectively promote and protect the rights of women and girls.

“This will be achieved through the provision of tailored capacity building and funding. Hence, strategic capacity building is fully embedded into project design and will remain a priority throughout the project’s lifecycle.

“This is the second year of the project. In the first year, 10 women’s rights network and 18 women’s rights organisations were engaged at national and state level partners respectively.

” They were engaged in three main capacity building training on financial management, report writing, documentation and media engagement among others.

” However the second year of implementation has brought on board an additional 72 women’s rights organisations at the community level bringing the number of project partners to 100.”

Obi added that the training tailored to suit the mandates of women’s rights network was vital to improve their capacities to function as network and as well carry out their advocacy mandates.

She said it would further help to contribute to policy development while also helping them to hold the government accountable in order to produce better policy, legal and social change in the country.

Meanwhile, Mrs Nkechi Omekedo, Actionaid Women’s Rights Programme Manager said the training was important to tackle the barrier of gender equality and as well provide technical support to the group.

Omekedo said the project was running across 32 countries in the world with targets women in Bauchi, Cross River, Enugu, Lagos, Kebbi, Kwara and FCT.

” Coalitions, alliances and networks have gradually become a critical vehicle for civil society organisations to be heard in governance.

” To have significant impact, they must speak in a unified voice as the cooperation of multiple stakeholders is necessary to transform social problems,” she said.

Participants at the trainingcut across women’s rights group including100 Women Lobby Group, Women in Politics Forum (WIPF), International Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA) and League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV).
