Through to speculations in the political space, a former Kwara Central Senatorial Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2015 general election, Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has made good his defection threat from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC with his over 100,000 supporters.
The politician, who registered in his ward, at Idi Igba Adeta in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, stated that Kwara residents are yearning and ready for change, adding that progressive politicians in the state were ready to rescue the state for alleged bad governance.
He stated that the members of newPDP who joined APC after its merger with the Congress for Progressive Change, Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigerian Peoples Party and part of All Progressives Grand Alliance had inflicted damage to APC.
He said, “All my supporters, we are left from PDP to APC. We are talking about over 100,000. The party, APC, had to send 250,000 cards in order to accommodate all of us.
“Hitherto we were in CPC and when CPC merged with ACN, they decided to bring in what they called new PDP. And we realized that the people coming from the new PDP into the alliance were not the people we could work with. There were agents of destruction. So we opted out of the alliance. We warned them then that the new PDP is a trap but they did not agree with us. They went on with the alliance, you can see the havoc they have caused to the party, they exited the party and we are back home where we belong in APC.”
He stated that Kwara State residents were ready for change, adding that politicians in APC are now more concerned about dislodging the ruling elite led by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
He said political heavyweights in APC had been collaborating and building consensus to defeat Saraki and the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 general elections.
Abdulrasaq said, “Our people have been yearning for change and they have been making demand. This is a new party that we have come into, we will study the terrain, look at the opportunities available. Change has come to Kwara. In Kaiama Local Government, 90 percent of the party members did not move to PDP, they remained where they are. 80 percent of Kwara North stayed behind. They are not moving. Even in Kwara Central, most did not move with them. So there is change in horizon and this is the beginning of the new dawn. Change to the advantage to the APC.
“For us in Kwara, the priority is about change. We had mal-administration for over 20 years. Now it is that change we want. It is not about who becomes governor or which geopolitical zone takes the mantle but we just want to get rid of these people that have mismanaged the economy of Kwara for years.
“Coming from the last local government election, anybody that lived in the place, will witness that change took place. The opposition won the election, the people are ready for the change and the politicians are prepared now to harness the change, they felt the heart of the people, they know that people want change so now they are acting responsibly to meet together to say change must come. That is why most of the politicians are now meeting together to say, ‘let us have a consensus, so we are working towards building a consensus.”
