The Southwest Zonal Leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is to set up Police Students Relations Committee (PSRC) for all the six Southwest states in Nigeria to curb security challenges in tertiary institutions.
Mr Kowe Odunayo, Southwest Coordinator of the association made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday.
Odunayo said the association would meet in Ogun state on January 8 to finalise its ongoing arrangements and plans to set up the committee.
“It is no longer news that our governors in the Southwest had collectively resolved to fight kidnapping and other security threats to standstill which resulted to the idea of ‘Amotekun’.
“A development that the Southwest zonal leadership of NANS sees as a commendable efforts of our governors in this region.
“No doubt, we as students are known to have all round means and access to sensitive information that will definitely go a long way in easing the works of the security agencies and also gaurrantee the security of lives and properties.
“The zonal leadership of NANS shall communicate in writing, names of the members of the PSRC to all state commisioner of police.”
Odunayo assured the governors that Nigerian students would be committed to join hands in making Southwest the safest region in the country, thereby make the region a most conducive zone for investors.
He, however, disagreed with the idea of coupling the indigenous security outfits (OPC and Vigilante group), saying that the aftermath would no doubt make the country trained security agencies porous.
“We will rather suggest that these indigenous security outfits should be separately mobilised so as to give intelligent information to the trained security agencies,” he said.
The police, army and NSCDC have rejected the planned inclusion of members of the Yoruba group- OPC, Agbekoya hunters and Vigilante group into the Western Nigeria Security Outfit named as ‘Operation Amotekun’.
It would be recalled that the operation which is to be inaugurated in Ibadan on January 9 was the outcome of a security summit held by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria for the six governors in the west to tackle kidnappings, ritual killings and other crimes ravaging the region.
