The Minister of Education Malam Adamu Adamu has called for international cooperation among commonwealth nations to advance the economies, social development and human rights in member countries.

Adamu, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, made the call during a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday in preparation for the celebration of the 2020 commonwealth day.

He said that the member governnent of the commonwealth should collaborate to influence world events and setting up programmes that are carried out bilaterally or by the commonwealth secretariat.

The theme for the 2020 edition of the celebration is “Delivering a common future: Connecting, innovating, transforming”.

The minister added that the theme was chosen because the governments and people of the 54 commonwealth countries connect at many levels through extensive and deep-rooted networks of friendship and goodwill.

“The countries and people of the commonwealth tackle all together climate change and its impacts, find sustainable ways of using the natural resources of our land and ocean, build peace and harmony through social and democratic development, encourage inclusive economic empowerment and fair trade and delivering a common future.

“Traditionally, all nations of the commonwealth observe the commonwealth day on every second Monday of March of every year and in order to promote its area of interest, a particular theme is usually chosen to reflect and depict the common issues that bind member countries together”.

He added that the ministry had a good number of pre-commonwealth day activities being planned for to include school’s quiz competition in which contestants would be tested in their English, Mathematics, Sciences, Current Affairs and issues around commonwealth.

Others he said would be youth lecture and dress rehearsals and the commonwealth activities proper.

Adamu said that top government officials, high commissioners of commonwealth countries in Nigeria, diplomatic corps, members of the national assembly, ministry of education and parastatals, and school children would gear the occasion.

He, therefore, charged the media for effective and wide coverage of the occasion.
